Iolite Gemstone Beads Beautiful iolite is known for and named for its beautiful blue color. The name iolite comes from the Greek word, ios, meaning violet. Here, you'll find a range of color from medium to dark blue. Graded AB by the manufacturer, you'll find this to a be a very nice stone. In the picture you may see a few gray/brown areas, which I first thought were due to impurities in the stone, but iolite is one of a few minerals that show strong pleochroism detectable by the naked eye. Pleochroism means that the stone changes color when viewed at different angles of polarized light. In iolite, this can be seen in a shift of color from blue to colorless or a brownish gray, and sometimes even yellow or deeper shades of blue. The camera catches it, and you may be able to see it by rolling the stones around in your hands. The rondelles are hand faceted, so allow for a little variation in cut, but expect extra bling!
