Meranti is the modern common name for a wood that is also sold in the market as "Philippine mahogany" or "Lauan." However, the Philippine mahogany traded in the past, was a different species that is no longer available, and neither the old species nor the modern species are true mahoganies. Meranti is a durable and lightweight wood with warm tan coloring, and soft yellow or red overtones.
